What is the best piece of advice you know?

Question

What is the best piece of advice you know?
Ive heard that it is everybodys favourite thing to give advice though not to many like to take it!

Answer

The two things I always tell students of minebrbr. There is no such thing as a rule.br. The world goes to people that show up.brbr No matter what situation youre in, no matter what you want, rules are crap. They were set up by some committee and can always be overturned, changed, erased, and exceptions made. Talk to the right person, make the right case, chase your problem up the ladder, and never accept that something just cant be done. Heck, even torture isnt reeeally illegal anymore.brbr All the best experiences of my life didnt come from taking the right class, getting the right certification, or passing the right interview. They came from stepping up, doing my own thing, and taking what I wanted. I wanted to be a reporter for a newspaper, so I just started going to meetings until everyone assumed someone else had hired me. I was syndicated in a month.brbrI wanted to be a speechwriter, so I joined a campaign just as it was starting. They asked me to go knock on doors for an hour a day, so I did. I also hung out around the campaign office doing random things, filing, going for coffee, until people got to know me well enough that they asked me to pitch in on this, weigh in on that, and now Im on the board of directors. brbrTotal time? Four months, and all my colleagues with their heads down getting a Masters in Political Science are sucking up to me and asking for my support.brbrLife wont come to you. It doesnt owe you anything. No one will ask you to submit a resume to be President or a Nobel laureate. Go out there dive in, be uncomfortable but confident and bite down hard on whatever it is you want. If the system got you what you wanted, everyone would have their dream job. Everyone doesnt.
